The September Injury Spike: How to Get Young Athletes Back to Sport Safely This Term

Ask any physio, PE teacher or strength and conditioning coach in Bedford, and they'll tell you the same thing: the first few weeks of a new school term are when young athletes get injured. Not mid-season, when training loads are at their highest. The start.

It seems backwards until you understand what's actually happening.

Why the Start of Term Is the Riskiest Window

Over the summer holidays, structured training tends to drop off. Some young athletes stay active — bike rides, kickabouts, the odd swim — but the specific, repeated loading that sport demands (sprinting, cutting, tackling, jumping, landing) usually reduces a lot, sometimes to almost nothing for six or seven weeks.

Then September arrives, and suddenly it's two or three training sessions plus a match, in the same week, often within the first fortnight back.

The body hasn't had time to rebuild the tolerance it lost over summer. Muscles, tendons and joints that could handle high-intensity, multi-directional loading in June are being asked to do the same thing again in September, but with several weeks of detraining in between. That mismatch — between what the body is ready for and what the schedule suddenly demands — is where non-contact injuries like hamstring strains, ankle sprains and growth-related knee and heel pain (common in early-teens during growth spurts) tend to show up.

It's not that your child got unlucky. It's that their body was asked to sprint before it had been asked to jog.

What Actually Helps

The good news is this is one of the most preventable injury patterns in youth sport. It just needs a bit of groundwork before — and during — the return to full training.

Rebuild load gradually, not all at once

Rather than jumping straight back into full-intensity training and matches in week one, the safest approach is a gradual ramp: lower-intensity movement in the final couple of weeks of the holidays, building sprinting, jumping and change-of-direction work back in progressively rather than all at once on day one of pre-season.

Strengthen the tissues that take the load

Hamstrings, calves, ankles and the muscles around the hips and knees are the areas that most commonly go under sudden increases in sprinting and cutting. General strength and conditioning work — squats, hinges, single-leg stability work, calf and hamstring strengthening — builds the underlying capacity that sport-specific training then relies on. Don't ignore growing pains

Growth-related pain around the knees (Osgood-Schlatter) or heels (Sever's disease) is common in early-teens, especially boys and girls going through rapid growth spurts, and tends to flare up exactly when training load increases quickly — like, say, the first few weeks of September. It's not something to push through. Managing load sensibly around a growth spurt, rather than stopping activity altogether, is usually the better approach — and worth a conversation with a coach or physio if it's persistent.

Prioritise sleep and recovery, not just training

Term-time brings earlier starts, homework, and generally less sleep than the school holidays. Recovery capacity drops just as training demand goes up — a rough combination. Protecting sleep in these first few weeks back matters as much as anything happening in the gym or on the pitch.

Communicate across everyone involved

One of the most common invisible risk factors is a young athlete training with three different coaches — school, club and personal strength coach — none of whom are talking to each other, all assuming someone else is managing the total load. A quick conversation between coaches (or simply an aware, involved parent) about what a child's week actually looks like across all their sport and training can catch overload before it becomes an injury.

FAQ

My child hasn't done any structured training all summer — is it too late to prepare before term starts? No. Even two to three weeks of gradually reintroducing running, jumping and some basic strength work before full training resumes meaningfully reduces injury risk compared to going from zero straight into full intensity.

Is some muscle soreness in the first few weeks normal, or a sign of a problem? General muscle soreness after a return to training is normal. Sharp pain, pain that's isolated to one joint, pain that gets worse rather than better over a few days, or any pain that changes how your child walks or runs is worth getting checked out rather than waiting on.

My child is going through a growth spurt and complaining of knee or heel pain — should they stop sport altogether? Usually not entirely — but the training load often needs adjusting while it settles. This is very common (Osgood-Schlatter and Sever's disease affect a large proportion of active teens) and manageable with the right approach. Worth flagging to a coach or physio rather than pushing through or stopping cold.
